5 Times Jonathan Van Ness from QueerEye Inspired Us with Self-Care Quotes

Updated: Feb 23, 2021

If you’re into sappy transformational reality TV shows, then you have definitely been watching QueerEye on Netflix. If you have not, you should definitely start because what’s better than a fabulous group of queer guys helping transform people’s lives and while delivering funny and inspirational lines? Although every member of the fab5 is great, Jonathan is the only one constantly going on about self-care and how simple it can be for everyone to do it. So in honour of Jonathan, here are five times he inspired us with self-care quotes.

1. “To me, self-care isn’t really shallow. Showing up for yourself, putting on a little moisturizer, can inspire so many different parts of your life.”

This quote beautifully summarizes how a simple act such as moisturizing can change you. Taking care of yourself even in the simplest of ways is a small act of showing yourself that you matter. Even though some people have ruined the meaning of self-care by making it sound shallow, don’t pay them any attention. What matters at the end of the day is how you feel and that you are taking small steps and moments to take care of yourself.

 2. “Self-care is the non-negotiable. That’s the thing that you have to do. And beauty is the thing that can be the benefit of the self-care. Beauty is not the point. Beauty is just a cute side-effect from self-care.”

If you’re someone that avoids beauty routines and products  because it seems like a lot of work and energy, then this quote is for you. It’s important to see self care as what it is - care for yourself! No matter what form of self care that you decide to engage in, it’s going to take time and energy as it should. Taking care of yourself and investing in yourself is an important step to better mental health. So don’t fear the word ‘self-care’ because it comes with many side benefits, such as beauty.

3. “When people say 'you can't teach an old dog new tricks' it's not true, because you can reinvent yourself and learn new things whenever you want.”

This is an important quote for many reasons. The first being that you are never too old to start investing in yourself, and you’re definitely not too old to learn something new! If you have tried to put self-care into practice, but have not been successful, that does not mean it’s the end of that journey for you. Don’t think of self-care as another task on your to-do list, but as a step towards reinventing yourself to become the best possible version of yourself. Self-care looks different for everyone, so keep on trying new things until you find one that works for you!

4. “Beauty and grooming should be these gorgeous bursts of wind beneath your wings so you can figure out how to feel a little cuter and look in the mirror and get those endorphins and be like, ‘I feel good!’

When it comes to self-care through beauty, this quote encompasses everything want to achieve. Beauty and self-care routines should never feel like a hassle, as Jonathan put it - they should feel like wings. The goal here is for you to not only look great but feel it too. Beauty should not be a pain, it should be uplifting. More importantly those endorphins that Jonathan talks about refer to an overall happiness and outlook, not just an appreciation for your look. According to CNN health, overall happiness occurs because endorphins are natural painkillers and bring out feelings of general well being. So do what you have to do in order to take care of yourself as your mind and body will be thanking you when those endorphins are constantly acting up.

5. "How you take care of yourself is how the world sees you. It's okay to have a relationship with yourself."

Last but not least, this quote sums up why you need to take care of yourself. Even if you don't care about what you look like, it is important to develop a good relationship with yourself. To quote RuPaul, of RuPaul’s Drag Race, another beloved Netflix show, “If you don’t love yourself, how in the hell are you gonna love somebody else?”. So don’t shy away from taking care of yourself, and let the world see you for the amazing person you truly are. Radiate the confidence that you’ll achieve through self-care.
